Panel Event with Freshfields
We have a very exciting event coming up straight after the Easter break with Freshfields! We are hosting a panel event in partnership with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer discussing a case study, a Q&A session and also a chance to network with our speakers to find out more about the firm, learn about their experiences and get some tips for applications!
We will be joined by two associates Elke Kendall, working in general commercial litigation and Sunil Singh who deals mostly with disputes and cyber groups!
Elke has experience with reputation management issues and defamation claims with a particular focus on clients in the sports sector. Joining Freshfields in 2015 as an Legal Support Assistant as part of the very first cohort to join the Manchester office she then completed her training contract at Brabners. Speak to Elke to hear more about her journey in the legal industry and learn more about how Freshfields Manchester office operates.
Sunil has experience in advising clients on a wide range of large-scale disputes, domestic and cross-border. He has previously advices clients on complex cyber attacks including data breaches, ransomware attacks and state sponsored attacks. If you are interested in learning more about how Freshfields work in cyber attacks chat to Sunil to hear about his experiences and some of legal issues he has had to work on.

Hi Everyone!
LWOBxUoM are excited to announce our FOCIAL! – A Fundraising Social!!!
We have teamed up with Manchester South Central Foodbank to bring you a night of fun and entertainment, which will also be helping those in need. All you need to do is come to Haus with a donation for the foodbank and enjoy a night of fun! Grab a drink, play a boardgame or come for a chat!
Time: Thursday 24th March 8pm till late

Manchester South Central Foodbank:
The Foodbank opened in April 2014 in response to the need for a foodbank that covered the areas of Hulme, Moss Side and Whalley Range. As a small local charity and established by local people they work to aid those living in isolation and food poverty. Their services rely upon donations from the general public. During the 2020/2021 financial year they distributed a staggering 80406.5kg of food to our communities equivalent to 56,624 meals!
Donations can include:
Tinned Vegetable/tinned potatoes
Tinned Tomatoes
Meals in a tin (meat and vegetarian)
Tinned Tuna/fish/meat
Tinned Fruits/Rice Pudding
Vegetable/Meat Soup
UHT Milk
Juice/Cordial

Toiletries (Male and Female but no sanitary products)
Pasta Sauce (Jar only)

Please do not bring fresh food items as the foodbank do not have fridges/freezers to store them.

Meet The Law Firm: Eversheds Sutherland
You have the opportunity to hear from an Associate at the international law firm, Eversheds Sutherlands. Zara O’Hare will be sharing about life at Eversheds, a case she has worked on and pro bono work the firm is involved in. Zara will also be sharing a recent case study within financial crime! There will be an opportunity for a live Q and A where you can ask questions about the firm and her experiences!
This will be a hybrid event where students can attend at (2.016/2.017) in Arthur Lewis Building or join via zoom.

Live session: Meet the First Afghan Female Olympian
Join us for an evening speaking to Afghanistan’s First Female Olympian! Friba Rezayee is the Founder of Women’s Leaders of Tomorrow, a non-profit organisation focused on improving education and living standards for Afghan women. She is a women’s rights activist and will be talking to us about the ongoing struggles and the current projects she is working on.

Halloween Themed Bake Sale
LWOBxUoM is hosting a Halloween themed Bake sale to raise funds for Action Aid UK's 'Afgan Appeal' project!
Action Aid UK works in seven provinces across Afghanistan, providing education programming for girls and boys, along with agriculture and food security support. They are planning to reach 35,000 people with food support, safe water, sanitation and hygiene kits for women and girls, along with counselling services to address stress and anxiety for those who have been displaced.
If you would like to contribute to the cause, please sign-up as a baker here: https://forms.gle/AcuycHm8jxFQNHUS7. Deadline to signup for the sales is 4:00pm on Tuesday 26th October.
Alternatively, you can just turn up at the time of sales to buy the bakes! All bakes will be priced at £1 and we will accept cash and online payments. All proceeds will be given to the Action Aid UK.
All students and staff at University of Manchester are welcome to sign up to bake and/or buy the bakes!
If you are baking, you can pick to be a part of either of our two main teams 1) Creepy Crawlies and 2) Fallen Angels. The team you pick will influence the decoration of the product you bake.
You can sign up as a group or individually to bake. You could bake items that fall into the following three categories:
1) Cakes/Cheesecakes/Brownies
2) Cupcakes
3) Cookies.
Please submit your baked items on 28th October in the SOSS common room between 10:00 - 11:30 am.
The team which sells the most items will win! And we're really excited to see you all there!!!

Manchester Legal Walk
This is a great opportunity to raise funds to provide free legal advice for those in most need. The 10km sponsored walk in Manchester will raise money for local legal advice centres in the city. Joining UoM’s Pro Bono Society we will walk for a good cause, meet new people and spread awareness about the importance of legal advice.
